Are you a Treehugger?

Since I have started blogging, I have starting reading other blogs…avidly.  I have found many that are “green” and many about parenting, some that are written by friends, many associated with publications (like the New York Times, Parenting magazine, etc.) and some that are total schlock.  But when I want to increase the breadth and depth of my granola knowledge, there are two blogs I turn to.  Really, every time I visit I think more highly of these blogs (really collections of blogs) – they help me be a granola mom and keep raising my consciousness about a spectrum of green matters.  I wanted to encourage everyone who checks out tan/green to check these out too.

Treehugger

This site offer green news tidbits in about a dozen areas – like Design + Architecture, Food + Health, and Cars + Transportation.  This site is well vetted, with a consistent 40 contributors, all professional writers.  There is a staff of editors and it was started by web pioneers (or at least early adopters with lots of commercial web development experience).   Treehugger has a great mobile site as well – in fact I think it is easier to navigate than the website…so the next time you find yourself waiting somewhere with your smartphone, check out Treehugger.com.  You will find something to interest you…in a visit there this weekend I learned that Soleil Moon Frye (yep, Punky Brewster) is bringing a line of organic baby products to Target; that the tanning booth tax (10%) will go into effect this month; that Seventh Day Adventists have the longest life expectancy in the US (88 years old!); and that makers of dishwasher detergent are voluntary phasing phosphates out of their products.  So there is a little something for everyone – and while there are clear liberal leanings there is nothing too preachy.

Cool Green Science: The Blog of The Nature Conservancy

This is obviously a science blog but it isn’t heady with scientific papers.  There is a lot of posting about the oil spill currently and overall there is good information about the current state of the environment and programs that are being implemented around the world (check out the Categories tab at the top of the page to see the areas you can check out).  Like Treehugger, there is a set staff of bloggers author (whose biographies and recent posts you can see when you click the Bloggers tab and then the author name) and there are many opportunities for readers to post comments and otherwise get involved in the discussion.  There are a number of interesting blogs listed in the blogroll down the right side of the site.  And the capstone here, for me, is the amazing photography – seeing the beauty of nature lifts my spirits most days.

Though I don’t tend to check these sites every day, I do go a few times a week and I always find them to be great resources and I always learn something new when I visit.  I hope you will have a chance to visit these sites and read something that resonates with you, raises your green consciousness and you can take into your daily living.
